Mumbai’s Revamped Sindoor Flyover Set to Transform South Mumbai Traffic

Mumbai: The newly reconstructed Sindoor Flyover, previously known as Carnac Bridge, will be officially opened on Thursday morning by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This vital infrastructure project, connecting South Mumbai’s eastern and western corridors, is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion in the bustling metropolis, according to a statement from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Located near Masjid Bunder railway station, the Sindoor Flyover links P D’Mello Road to key commercial hubs such as Crawford Market, Kalbadevi, and Mohammad Ali Road. The BMC undertook the project after the 150-year-old Carnac Bridge was deemed unsafe by Central Railway and dismantled in August 2022. Under the supervision of Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, the reconstruction was completed by June 10, 2025, ensuring a modern and secure structure.

The flyover, spanning 328 meters with 70 meters crossing railway tracks, has undergone rigorous load testing and received safety and stability certifications, along with a No Objection Certificate from the Railway Department. The BMC highlights that the Sindoor Flyover will enhance connectivity around Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Masjid Bunder, and Mohammad Ali Road, providing a critical east-west link for commuters.

The renaming of the bridge to Sindoor Flyover pays homage to Operation Sindoor, a military operation launched by India in response to a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22. The new name reflects a shift from the bridge’s colonial-era title, originally honoring Sir James Rivett-Carnac, a former Bombay Province governor from 1839 to 1841.

The inauguration ceremony, scheduled for 10 a.m. on July 10, 2025, will also be attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, alongside other dignitaries, including Minister Ashish Shelar and Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar. The BMC anticipates that the Sindoor Flyover will serve as a vital artery for South Mumbai, easing traffic flow and boosting accessibility to its vibrant commercial districts.
