Mumbai Police Constable Assaulted By Wife, Son; Bleeds To Death

In a shocking escalation of household tensions, Mumbai police have detained the wife and son of a veteran constable on charges of culpable homicide after a brutal beating left the officer bleeding to death in their government quarters. What began as a routine domestic argument spiraled into violence, claiming the life of 52-year-old Pravin Suryawanshi and exposing deep-seated family rifts over money and assets.
The tragedy unfolded on September 9 in Pratiksha Nagar, Sion, where Suryawanshi, a longtime officer at Shivaji Nagar police station, was found unresponsive in his official residence. Authorities initially treated the discovery as an accidental death, filing a standard report and beginning preliminary inquiries. But as details emerged, the narrative shifted dramatically.
Suryawanshi’s brother and other kin quickly raised alarms, pointing to chronic financial wrangling with his wife, Smita Suryawanshi, 42, and their son, Pratik, 22. Relatives claimed the constable’s recent moves transferring properties in Nashik and Kalyan to family members and entrusting his ATM card to his brother for everyday costs had ignited fury in the household. Investigators now believe these decisions were the flashpoint for the deadly confrontation.
According to police accounts, the confrontation ignited outside Shivaji Nagar station that afternoon, with Smita and Pratik accosting the constable. Returning home, the argument boiled over into a savage attack. Suryawanshi was shoved against a window frame, which shattered under the force, inflicting deep gashes across his body. A post-mortem examination later uncovered a staggering 38 injuries, pinpointing hemorrhage and shock as the fatal culprits classifying the death as unnatural and prompting the case’s upgrade to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Rather than summon help, the assailants reportedly abandoned him to his wounds. It wasn’t until relatives arrived hours later that he was ferried to Sion Hospital, only for medics to pronounce him dead on arrival. Forensic experts emphasized that prompt treatment could have saved his life, underscoring the delay’s deadly toll. The deep lacerations on his right hand alone caused catastrophic blood loss.
On Wednesday, Mumbai police formally arrested Smita and Pratik, slapping them with the serious charges as probes continue to unearth the full scope of the feud. This heartbreaking case serves as a stark reminder of how simmering resentments can erupt into irreversible tragedy within the very walls meant to shelter us.
