Pawar Family Reunion? NCP Factions Weigh Possibility Amid Political Pressure

Mumbai: As buzz grows over a potential alliance between Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, internal discussions within the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) hint at the possibility of a rapprochement between Sharad Pawar and his nephew, Ajit Pawar.
This renewed speculation follows several meetings between Sharad and Ajit, who split from the parent party in 2023. Despite the interactions, both Sharad Pawar and NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule have publicly dismissed any immediate plans for a merger.
According to Media Reports, sources within Sharad Pawar’s camp revealed that four party MLAs are advocating for a reunion between the two NCP factions to become part of Maharashtra’s ruling Mahayuti alliance. These legislators have reportedly been urging Sharad Pawar to consider the move.
Sharad Pawar added fuel to the discussion during a recent informal media interaction in Pune, where he suggested that any decision on reuniting with Ajit would be left to the younger generation. Acknowledging divergent views within his faction, he noted that while some members see reunification as a practical step for constituency development, others remain opposed to the idea.
Pawar maintained his own stance of aligning with the Opposition, emphasizing that any call on reconciliation with Ajit’s group would be made by Supriya Sule and state party president Jayant Patil.
Ajit Pawar-led NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal expressed optimism over Sharad Pawar’s remarks. “If estranged families like the Thackerays are attempting a reunion, why not us? His statement offers hope,” Bhujbal told reporters, adding that such a move could boost the party’s strength and influence.
Meanwhile, a senior leader from NCP (SP) admitted that MLAs have been lobbying for a merger but reiterated that the final decision lies with Sharad Pawar. “Even if the merger happens, I’ll consider my next steps. As of now, I don’t see it materializing,” he said.
Another insider close to both factions dismissed the likelihood of a reunion, citing complex challenges that go beyond personal wishes.
Supriya Sule has reiterated her commitment to the Opposition, aligning herself with her father’s position. “My father has chosen to remain with the Opposition, and I fully support that decision,” she said.
For Rohit Pawar, MLA and grandnephew of Sharad, the question transcends politics. “It’s also a family matter, and emotions are involved,” he said in Pune on Friday. While expressing a desire for unity, he emphasized that any decision would require joint agreement from Sharad Pawar, Supriya Sule, Jayant Patil, and Ajit Pawar.
