Navi Mumbai Man Rescued After Three Years of Isolation in Squalid Flat

In Navi Mumbai, a 55-year-old former computer programmer, Anup Kumar Nair, was rescued by social workers from the Social and Evangelical Association for Love (SEAL) after locking himself in his apartment for over three years. The rescue took place at his residence in Gharkool Society, Sector 24, Juinagar, following a distress call from a concerned neighbor.
Nair, who had been grappling with severe depression since the death of his parents in recent years, was found living in deplorable conditions. His flat was filled with heaps of garbage, discarded food packets, broken furniture, and human waste. His hair was matted and overgrown, and he suffered from a severe leg infection that had turned his skin black. Nair slept on a chair in his living room, as his bed was irreparably damaged.
Residents of Gharkool Society noted that Nair rarely opened his door and almost never disposed of his trash, often requiring neighbors to urge him to do so. His only connection to the outside world was through food delivery apps, which he used to sustain himself. SEAL workers, alerted by a neighbor, entered his home and promptly took him to their ashram in Panvel for medical treatment and care.

Nair’s mother, Poonamma Nair, had worked in the telecommunications wing of the Indian Air Force, and his father, V P Kutty Krishnan Nair, was employed at Tata Hospital in Mumbai. The loss of his parents, coupled with the suicide of his elder brother nearly two decades ago, reportedly deepened Nair’s isolation. When interviewed at the Panvel rescue center, Nair stated, “I don’t have any friends at present, and my parents and brother already died.”
Abraham Mathai, chief patron of SEAL, told, “It is ironic how some citizens become extremely lonely and depressed in this crowded city, as they are unable to reach out for help. Fortunately for Nair, he was rescued, but there are countless others who simply perish inside their own locked flats, their bodies found days later.”
