Mumbai: With commercial operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport beginning on December 25, Mumbai’s air travel map is set for a major shift. The new hub is expected to ease the load on the city’s main airport and cut travel time for passengers headed to Navi Mumbai, Panvel and nearby areas.
For travellers starting from South Mumbai, authorities have laid out a clear, signposted road route to ensure smooth movement on the airport’s first day of operations.
Route from Colaba and heritage precincts
Passengers starting from Colaba, Nariman Point, Mantralaya or the Gateway of India can use Captain Prakash Pethe Marg or Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road. These roads feed into Dimelo Road, which connects directly to the Eastern Freeway.
Once on the Eastern Freeway, motorists need to continue straight towards Atal Setu, which offers a seamless crossing over Thane Creek. Traffic officials have indicated that this stretch is expected to remain the fastest and most dependable option, especially during peak hours.
Routes from Parel, Worli and Mahalakshmi
Travellers from central and south-central Mumbai have multiple access points to the Eastern Freeway. Commuters in Parel can take Acharya Dhonde Marg, those from Worli can use Elijah Moses Road, and passengers from Mahalakshmi can reach the Freeway via Keshwarath Khadiya Marg.
All these feeder routes merge onto the Eastern Freeway, giving drivers a direct corridor to Atal Setu without having to navigate heavily congested inner-city roads.
From Atal Setu to the airport terminal
After entering Atal Setu, travellers should drive straight across Thane Creek and then take the last left exit at Chirle onto NH348. Motorists are advised to stay in the left lanes while heading towards the Gavhan Fata interchange, after which they must turn onto Amra Marg.

Continuing along Amra Marg leads to the Lupe junction at the western main entrance of Navi Mumbai International Airport. From this point, a dedicated airport access road carries passengers directly to Terminal 1.
Alternate route for late-night or early-morning trips
For late-night or early-morning flights, an alternate route is available via the Ulve exit on Atal Setu. From Ulve, drivers can proceed in the direction of the Jio Institute and then take a right turn onto Amra Marg, reaching the same western entrance to the airport.
Authorities have advised passengers to follow road signage closely and factor in extra travel time on the initial days, as traffic flows adjust to operations at the new airport.
