Mumbai: In a major crackdown on fare evasion, the Western Railway (WR) has collected a massive ₹84.20 crore in fines from ticketless and irregular travel cases between April and August 2025. Of this, nearly ₹23 crore came from the Mumbai suburban network alone.

Extensive Ticket Checking Drives
The ticket-checking operations covered a wide range of services, including Mumbai suburban trains, long-distance mail and express trains, passenger trains, as well as holiday specials.
August 2025 Records Highest Recovery
The month of August saw the biggest collection surge, with ₹13.21 crore recovered through the detection of 2.39 lakh cases of ticketless or irregular travel, including unbooked luggage. This marks a 166% increase from August 2024. Out of this amount, ₹3.44 crore came from 88,000 cases in Mumbai suburban trains alone.
Above Target Collections
An official from WR said the recovery not only reflects a 35% rise compared to last year, but also exceeded the Railway Board’s set target by nearly 13%. The credit, the official added, goes to the efforts of dedicated ticket-checking squads working under the supervision of senior commercial officers.
