Mumbai Weather : Santacruz And Suburban Areas Swelter As Temperatures Climb

Mumbai and its surrounding metropolitan region experienced a notably warm Wednesday, with intense afternoon heat leaving residents uncomfortable. The maximum temperature in Santacruz reached 35 degrees Celsius, while Colaba recorded 33.8 degrees Celsius, according to observations from the Mumbai Regional Weather Department.
In the broader Konkan belt, temperatures soared even higher. Dahanu posted the state’s highest maximum at 35.9 degrees Celsius—7.9 degrees above the seasonal average—making it the hottest spot recorded that day. Ratnagiri saw a maximum of 35.4 degrees Celsius, 2.4 degrees above normal.
Compared to typical levels, Santacruz’s peak was 3.4 degrees higher than average, and Colaba’s was 3.3 degrees elevated. Over the preceding 24 hours, the maximum temperature rose by 2.6 degrees at Colaba and by a striking 8 degrees at Dahanu.
Weather officials attribute the unusual warmth to a delayed onset of sea breeze. Normally arriving around 11:30 AM to cool the surface, the breeze has been slow to reach the ground this season. This has trapped cooler air beneath a layer of warmer air aloft, preventing natural cooling and pushing temperatures well above average. Shubhangi Bhute, an officer with the Mumbai Regional Weather Department, explained that this inversion-like condition is likely to continue over the next two days.
The stagnant air has also trapped pollutants closer to the ground, contributing to persistent dust even in the afternoons. Mumbai’s Air Quality Index stood at 135 on Wednesday, while Navi Mumbai recorded 140, indicating moderate to poor air quality.

Eastern winds currently prevail in the region. Although the heat has intensified across Maharashtra—with winter-like chill retreating—some relief is anticipated during nights and early mornings as temperatures drop. The department forecasts continued rising daytime temperatures in Mumbai, including areas like Kalyan-Dombivli, leading to more uncomfortable afternoons in the immediate future.
