Mumbai Braces for Cool Mornings as Mercury Dips to 19°C Amid Moderate Air Quality

Mumbai, January 7, 2026 – Residents of Mumbai woke up to pleasant winter conditions on Wednesday, with the city logging a minimum temperature of 19 degrees Celsius under predominantly clear skies in both the city and its suburbs.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a high of approximately 31 degrees Celsius for the day, maintaining the mild weather pattern.

Air quality in the metropolis remained in the moderate category, registering an index of 129 according to the Sammer app. Although this level is generally acceptable, it could lead to respiratory discomfort for individuals suffering from lung diseases, asthma, or heart issues over prolonged exposure.

Specific readings across various monitoring stations highlighted some variation: Bandra Kurla Complex recorded 137, Borivali 128, Byculla 171, Andheri East 151, Chembur 111, Deonar 148, Ghatkopar 118, and Kandivali 120.

The article also noted broader winter impacts elsewhere in India. A intense cold wave has enveloped Delhi-NCR, triggering a yellow alert for cold conditions and dense fog. Minimum temperatures hovered around 6 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs struggling to reach 15 degrees Celsius, influenced by chilly winds from Himachal Pradesh. Schools up to Class 8 in Noida have been shut until January 10 as a precautionary measure.

In northern hill states, the IMD anticipated light snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh due to a western disturbance, with higher reaches like Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, and Rohtang Pass already blanketed. Tourist spots such as Shimla, Manali, and Kufri are likely to see further cooling, while dense fog warnings persist in lower areas until January 8.

Rajasthan’s Sikar saw its minimum plunge to 7.5 degrees Celsius amid widespread fog that hampered visibility. In response, local authorities declared holidays for Classes 1 to 8 from January 6 to 10 and adjusted timings for higher classes.
