Mumbai: Residents of Mumbai may have to endure hot and humid weather for a while longer as the southwest monsoon continues to show little progress across large parts of Maharashtra. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the delayed advancement of the monsoon has prevented widespread rainfall from reaching many regions of the state.
The weather department has indicated that Mumbai is likely to experience warm and uncomfortable conditions, with humidity levels remaining high. While isolated spells of rain or thundershowers cannot be ruled out, significant monsoon activity is not expected immediately.
Monsoon Advancement Remains Stalled
Meteorologists have attributed the delay to unfavourable large-scale weather conditions that have slowed the monsoon’s movement over Maharashtra. The lack of a strong moisture flow from the Arabian Sea and weakened monsoon winds have restricted further advancement of the seasonal rains across the state.
The southwest monsoon had entered parts of South Konkan and adjoining regions earlier, but its progress has since slowed considerably. Weather experts continue to monitor atmospheric conditions for signs of renewed activity.
Rainfall Activity Limited to Select Regions
Although widespread rainfall remains absent, some districts in Maharashtra may witness scattered showers, thunderstorms, and localised rain activity. However, these weather events are unlikely to provide broad monsoon relief across the state in the immediate future.
The IMD has maintained that temperatures in Mumbai and neighbouring areas are expected to remain elevated, with humid conditions adding to the discomfort felt by residents.
Delay Raises Concerns Across Maharashtra
The prolonged pause in monsoon advancement has resulted in rainfall deficits across several parts of Maharashtra. Many regions have recorded significantly lower rainfall than normal for this time of year, raising concerns among farmers and water management authorities.
Mumbai has also been experiencing one of its driest June periods in recent years, with delayed rains affecting reservoir levels and prompting discussions around water conservation measures.
IMD Expects Conditions to Improve
Despite the current slowdown, the IMD expects weather conditions to gradually become more favourable for monsoon advancement in the coming days. Forecast models suggest rainfall activity over the Konkan region could increase as atmospheric conditions improve.
Until then, Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra are likely to continue experiencing hot, humid weather while awaiting a stronger monsoon revival.
