Mumbai Water Tanker Strike Ends After Meeting With Civic Body Chief

Mumbai: The Mumbai Water Tankers Association (MWTA) has officially ended its strike following a meeting with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Administrator Bhushan Gagrani on Monday.
Rajesh Thakur, General Secretary of MWTA, announced that the strike has been withdrawn, and the city’s tanker-based water supply resumed immediately after the discussions.
The association had launched the strike on April 10 to oppose notices issued to borewell and ring-well owners, requiring them to comply with the Central Ground Water Authority’s (CGWA) 2020 guidelines. The MWTA was demanding that these notices be cancelled outright, not merely postponed.
The four-day protest disrupted tanker water supply across Mumbai, impacting thousands of residents. Tankers play a crucial role in delivering water to a wide range of areas — from slum clusters and upscale residences to hospitals, construction zones, and commercial properties. MWTA operates approximately 3,000 tankers, supplying an estimated 300 million litres of water daily.
