Mumbai To Launch India’s First Eco-Friendly E-Water Taxi Says Minister Nitesh Rane

The excitement of Mumbaikars regarding the e-water taxi will soon come to an end as India’s first e-water taxi is set to operate in Mumbai. Sweden’s Candela company will conduct a pilot project for the eco-friendly water taxi, and Fisheries & Ports Minister Nitesh Rane has instructed Sweden’s Consul General Sven Östberg to expedite the launch of this service.

During a meeting held at the Mantralaya today, Minister Nitesh Rane discussed the e-water taxi project with Consul General Sven Östberg. The meeting was attended by Mr. Östberg’s advisor, Saloni Jhaveri, along with senior officials. Minister Rane stated that Mumbai’s transportation system is under significant strain, and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is keen on launching the e-water taxi service as soon as possible.

The pilot project for water transport between Gateway of India to Elephanta and Gateway of India to Alibaug will help ease Mumbai’s traffic congestion. As per the agreement with Sweden’s Candela company, they must ensure the safety of passengers, environmental sustainability, and affordable fares for citizens. The state government will take responsibility for the necessary permissions required for the company. Mr. Östberg expressed interest in the development of Maharashtra’s ports and stated that Sweden’s Candela company will soon visit to present detailed information. Following this, the pilot project for the water taxi will commence immediately.

Since Mr. Östberg showed interest in Sweden’s contribution to port development, Minister Rane suggested an inspection of Sasoon Dock. He urged Sweden’s company to submit a proposal to the state government regarding port development. Locations suitable for transportation should be identified to develop a state-of-the-art model port that will be ranked number one in the country. Minister Rane directed that discussions with the Maritime Board be held, and a survey should be conducted in April, followed by a report submission. Mr. Östberg provided insights into port development, cleanliness, facilities, and investment opportunities.
