Mumbai Schools Closed Today? BMC Clarifies On School Status Amid Heavy Rain, Yellow Alert

Mumbai: Schools, colleges and other educational institutions across Mumbai will remain open on Thursday, July 23, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a yellow alert for the financial capital and an orange alert for the neighbouring areas of Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Ratnagiri.

Providing clarity on whether schools in Mumbai are shut due to the heavy rains, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that all educational institutions across the city will remain functional today and tomorrow as well.

When Does BMC Shut Schools And Colleges In Mumbai?

The BMC typically orders a public holiday for educational institutions in Mumbai only when the IMD issues a “red” warning for the city, citing the possibility of intense spells of rainfall over a prolonged period.

An IMD red alert is sounded when total rainfall within a 24-hour span exceeds 204 mm.

The city, however, is unlikely to witness such heavy spells this week, with the IMD issuing only a yellow alert. While a yellow alert calls for heightened alertness among administration and citizens, school closures remain unlikely unless the IMD upgrades the warning to red, or to an orange alert in the event of a possible heavy downpour accompanied by gusty winds.

IMD Yellow Alert In Mumbai, Orange Alert In Thane

According to the IMD forecast, Mumbai will remain under a yellow alert until Friday, July 24, marking the third consecutive day of the alert amid heavy downpours.

Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Ratnagiri are expected to see severe weather conditions, with the IMD forecasting very heavy rainfall in these regions over the next 24 hours under an orange alert.
