Mumbai: Heavy rain once again brought parts of Mumbai and the surrounding region to a standstill on Sunday, with waterlogging reported on roads and railway tracks, making the daily commute difficult for thousands of people. Nalasopara, Dadar and Kurla were among the areas badly affected as commuters struggled to make their way through flooded streets and stations.
Nalasopara saw some of the worst waterlogging, particularly on the eastern side of the railway station. Areas around Centre Park and Tulinj Bridge were also flooded, forcing pedestrians to walk through knee deep water in several places. The situation made it difficult for both motorists and commuters to move around the area.
At Kurla railway station, rainwater accumulated on the tracks, adding to concerns for passengers travelling by train. Dadar also witnessed heavy showers, with continuous rain making road travel slower and more challenging.
The rain has come at a time when Mumbai is gearing up for the Ganesh festival, raising concerns about traffic, public transport and movement across the city in the coming days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar. The weather agency has warned of thunderstorms, lightning and spells of rain, along with strong winds that could reach 40-50 kmph in some areas. Isolated pockets may also receive heavy rainfall.
There is little immediate relief in sight. More rain is expected across Mumbai on Monday, with cloudy conditions and spells of moderate rain or thundershowers likely to continue.
The weather could also affect Ganesh festival activities. Light to moderate rain is expected around Tuesday, when Ganesh idol immersion processions will take place across the city. Authorities and residents are therefore likely to keep a close watch on weather and waterlogging conditions.
For Mumbai’s commuters, the message is simple another wet and difficult day could be ahead. With roads already flooded in several areas and railway tracks affected, people travelling across the city and suburbs may need to allow extra time and remain cautious while stepping out.
