Mumbai Receives First Significant Pre-Monsoon Rains in Mulund

Mumbai experienced its initial notable pre-monsoon rainfall of the season on Friday, bringing welcome respite to residents after weeks of intense heat and high humidity. Moderate showers were reported primarily in Mulund and adjacent eastern suburbs, including Bhandup, marking the city’s first proper taste of rain ahead of the full monsoon.

Social media platforms were quickly filled with videos capturing the downpour. Footage from a residential parking area in Mulund showed buses, motorcycles, and cars thoroughly soaked as rain fell steadily across the locality. Residents expressed relief at the change in weather, with the visuals highlighting puddles forming around vehicles and rain-drenched surroundings.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecasted that the southwest monsoon would make its onset over Kerala around May 26. Under normal progression, it was expected to advance into Maharashtra by June 2 and reach Mumbai around June 5. IMD Mumbai Director Bikram Singh had shared this timeline in recent statements.

Weather enthusiasts had anticipated increased rain activity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Popular weather tracker Rishikesh Agre, active online as ‘Mumbai Rains’, noted earlier on Friday that atmospheric conditions were turning favourable. He posted on X that Mumbai and surrounding areas could see improved rainfall from Friday evening, describing the next two days as promising for showers across several parts of the MMR. He advised residents to keep umbrellas handy.

The pre-monsoon showers coincided with a notable improvement in Mumbai’s air quality. The city recorded cleaner air and clearer skies on Friday morning, with the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) remaining in the ‘good’ category at 29 during early hours. Several neighbourhoods reported exceptionally low readings, including Andheri at 8, Worli at 10, Gamdevi at 13, and both Kandivali East and Walkeshwar at 15.

This development aligns with earlier observations by weather monitors tracking rainfall patterns across the region. The arrival of these showers signals the gradual buildup toward the official monsoon season, offering a brief break from the uncomfortable pre-monsoon conditions that have prevailed in recent weeks.
