Mumbai : Red Alert For Heavy Rain, Schools Shut, Radhanagari Dam Overflows

Mumbai: Maharashtra is preparing for one of the strongest spells of this year’s monsoon after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed Mumbai and several adjoining districts under a Red Alert, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next couple of days. The weather warning has already prompted authorities to shut schools in several neighbouring districts, activate emergency response teams and urge people to avoid unnecessary travel.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has appealed to citizens to remain cautious and follow official advisories as heavy rain is expected to lash Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and parts of the Konkan region through the weekend. Officials say all disaster management agencies have been put on alert to tackle any emergencies arising from flooding, waterlogging or falling trees.

Schools Closed as Precaution

In view of the Red Alert, district administrations in Thane, Palghar,Vasai-Virar, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan Dombivli have declared a holiday for schools to ensure the safety of students. Since July 5 falls on a weekend, most schools in Mumbai city remain closed, while colleges and educational institutions are expected to issue updates depending on local weather conditions.

Parents have been advised to keep an eye on official announcements before sending children to educational institutions once classes resume.

IMD Warns of Extremely Heavy Rain

According to the IMD, Mumbai could witness intense spells of rain capable of causing waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic snarls and disruption to road and rail transport. Authorities have also cautioned that strong winds and poor visibility may accompany the downpour at isolated locations.

The city has already recorded substantial rainfall over the past few days, and with more showers forecast, civic agencies are closely monitoring vulnerable areas known to experience flooding during the monsoon.

Government Issues Emergency Advisory

The Maharashtra government has urged residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary during periods of intense rainfall. Citizens have been asked to avoid flooded roads, stay away from damaged electric poles and trees, and immediately report emergencies to local authorities.

Emergency control rooms have been activated across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to respond quickly to weather related incidents.
