Mumbai Radar Relocation to Unlock Vast Land for Affordable Homes in Dahisar

Mumbai — The Airports Authority of India’s (AAI) high-frequency radar installation in Dahisar is set to be moved to Gorai, a step that will release substantial land for affordable housing developments in north Mumbai, according to Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu.
The announcement follows consultations involving the Civil Aviation Ministry, the Maharashtra government, and other stakeholders. Speaking virtually at a meeting on Sunday, Mr. Naidu stated that the ministry would pursue cabinet approval for the shift to enable housing construction to begin promptly.
Radar facilities in Dahisar and Juhu have long imposed restrictions on building heights in surrounding areas. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the state Legislative Assembly on Saturday that the central government, including the Civil Aviation Ministry and AAI, has consented to relocating the Dahisar radar. The state has offered to cover relocation expenses and provide alternative land at no cost.
Mr. Naidu highlighted the longstanding impact on urban development in north Mumbai, noting that restrictions had left thousands residing in aging, unsafe structures. “This decision will fulfill the aspirations of Dahisar residents for proper homes,” he said, emphasising years of discussions. He credited Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, the local MP for north Mumbai, with pushing the issue forward.
The relocation is expected to free up around 1,000 acres across a 6-km stretch, paving the way for affordable housing initiatives. Mr. Naidu described the move as establishing Dahisar as a center for improved living standards while maintaining aviation safety. It will also support regional economic growth and provide relief to numerous families.
Mr. Goyal, addressing the meeting remotely, projected that up to 50,000 homes could be built or redeveloped over the next five years, creating jobs and delivering modern amenities. He praised the collaboration between central and state authorities, particularly Mr. Fadnavis’s swift allocation of land in Gorai.

Under the plan, 40% of the vacated AAI land in Dahisar will be dedicated to public use. A separate proposal for relocating the Juhu radar is under technical review, with approval processes to follow site finalisation.
The initiative aims to enable redevelopment in Dahisar and Juhu areas, transforming north Mumbai’s urban landscape.
