Mumbai: A fatal road accident on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway claimed the life of a truck driver and left another person injured after two heavy vehicles collided inside a tunnel near Khopoli in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. The incident took place on Sunday evening and briefly disrupted traffic movement on the busy highway.
According to a report by The Free Press Journal, the crash occurred inside the new tunnel near Adoshi when a truck travelling from Pune towards Mumbai reportedly lost control. The vehicle rammed into another truck moving ahead of it before crashing into the roadside safety barrier and overturning on the expressway.
Police said the impact of the collision caused severe damage to the truck, trapping the driver inside the cabin. The driver died on the spot due to the injuries sustained in the crash.
Authorities later identified the deceased as Mohammad Ibrahim Javed (32), a resident of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. He was driving the truck with registration number MH 43 Y 6936 when the accident occurred. According to police officials, the vehicle collided with another truck bearing registration number MH 46 F 5913.
Investigators believe that after hitting the truck ahead, the vehicle was pushed forward and subsequently struck the protective railing inside the tunnel before overturning on the roadway. One person sustained injuries in the accident and was provided medical attention.
Emergency response teams and highway authorities reached the scene soon after the incident. Rescue personnel worked to remove the damaged vehicle and clear the wreckage from the expressway. Traffic flow, which had slowed due to the accident, was gradually restored once the road was cleared.
The Mumbai–Pune Expressway, one of India’s busiest highways connecting Mumbai and Pune, frequently witnesses heavy vehicular movement, especially on weekends. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
