Mumbai : Mumbai Police have strongly denied viral social media posts claiming that 12 minor children, including several girls, went missing across the city within a 36-hour period, calling the messages false and misleading. The force issued a clarification after the reports circulated widely online and prompted public concern. The police emphasized that the information “does not reflect true facts” and warned that legal action could be taken against those deliberately spreading rumours to cause panic among residents.
The claim originated from a report suggesting that 12 children had disappeared from various parts of the metropolis in just one and a half days, triggering fears about potential organized trafficking networks. In response, authorities pointed out that although missing child cases are registered and taken seriously, the circulated figures were inaccurate.
Certain social media handles are misrepresenting data and indulging in rumour-mongering regarding cases of missing and kidnapped children. We categorically deny these claims.

In a statement on social media, Mumbai Police highlighted that every incident involving a missing minor is registered under appropriate legal provisions and investigated with urgency and empathy. They stressed that sensational claims on messaging platforms can cause unnecessary distress to families and the wider community.
Officials also noted that verified data over previous months showed a significant number of missing cases recorded by the police, but stressed that many children were quickly traced and reunited with their families. They urged the public to consult credible sources and official channels for information on such sensitive matters, rather than relying on unverified forwards that create confusion and fear.
Mumbai Police’s clarification aims to counter misinformation and reinforce trust in law enforcement’s efforts to protect children and address legitimate cases without unnecessary alarm.
