Mumbai: 19-year-old arrested for blackmailing and extorting minor girl with obscene video

In a disturbing case of digital extortion, police at VB Nagar station in Kurla have taken into custody a 19-year-old man accused of blackmailing a minor girl using an objectionable video he secretly recorded.
The suspect and the 16-year-old victim, both residents of the same neighborhood, had been acquaintances for some time. Back in May 2025, the youth allegedly captured the compromising footage of the girl. He then weaponized it, threatening to share it widely unless she paid him ₹75,000—funds he claimed were needed for scooter installments and a new mobile phone.
Terrified of public shame, the teenager resorted to stealing her mother’s gold chain, ring, and earrings, valued at exactly ₹75,000. She sold the items to a nearby jeweler in Kurla and handed over the proceeds to her tormentor.
The crime unraveled when the girl’s mother discovered the missing jewelry during a routine cupboard cleanup. Upon confrontation, the distraught teen confessed the full ordeal, prompting her parent to file a formal complaint at VB Nagar police station.

Officers swiftly registered a case and apprehended the accused on Saturday, October 25. “We’ve confiscated his mobile phone and other digital gadgets to investigate any distribution or additional storage of the video,” a senior police official stated.
The perpetrator, who operates a modest business in Kurla, faces charges under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the POCSO Act. The victim, showing remarkable courage amid her fear, is receiving counseling. “She’s demonstrated real resilience by coming forward. We’re committed to providing her full psychological assistance,” the officer added.
Investigators are probing the jewelry sale, as the girl has yet to name the buyer. They are determining if she acted alone or involved intermediaries.
This incident underscores the rising dangers of cyber blackmail targeting vulnerable youth, with authorities urging vigilance and prompt reporting.
