Traffic Cop Struck and Injured by Fleeing Scooterist in Worli Drunk-Driving Crackdown

Mumbai – A traffic constable was injured after being hit by a speeding scooter during a late-night drunk-driving checkpoint near the National Sports Club of India in Worli early on Thursday.
The constable, 30-year-old Ashish Nighot, was on duty as part of the Mumbai Traffic Police’s extensive New Year’s Eve operation to curb drunk driving. According to his statement to the Tardeo police, the incident happened around 3:30 am when a Suzuki Access scooter approached rapidly from the Worli Lotus signal direction.
Nighot signaled the rider to stop, but the scooterist accelerated instead, ramming directly into him. The impact caused sharp pain in his elbow, fingers, and knee, pushing him backward. The rider fled the scene without stopping to check on the officer.
Colleagues immediately transported Nighot to Nair Hospital, where medical staff treated him for multiple abrasions and injuries. Fortunately, there were no fractures, and he was discharged after care.
A senior police officer described the event as deeply distressing, noting that the constable was working to ensure public safety during New Year celebrations, only to be struck and left injured by a speeding vehicle.
