Mumbai’s Metro and Monorail Stations to Host EV Battery Swapping Network

Mumbai is taking a significant step toward sustainable urban mobility with the introduction of battery-swapping stations at 31 metro and monorail stations, a collaborative effort between the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL) and Honda Power Pack Energy India Pvt Ltd. The initiative, launched under the MMMOCL’s recently approved electric vehicle (EV) policy, aims to enhance convenience for electric two- and three-wheeler users, particularly delivery workers and fleet operators.
The stations, equipped with Honda’s E:swap technology, will allow EV users to exchange depleted Honda Mobile Power Packs for fully charged ones in under two minutes. This rapid process eliminates the need for lengthy charging times, addressing range anxiety and supporting seamless travel in Mumbai’s bustling urban environment. The network includes 25 stations along Metro Lines 2A (Yellow Line) and 7 (Red Line), as well as six monorail stations, with key locations such as Gundavali, Andheri West, Malad West, Dahisar East, Goregaon East, Chembur, Wadala, Naigaon, and Mint Colony. The first station is already operational at Dahisar East.

According to an MMRDA official, this system ensures uninterrupted power access, saving time for commuters navigating the city’s dense traffic. The initiative is expected to generate approximately Rs 30 lakh in non-fare revenue for MMMOCL, boosting the financial sustainability of the transit system while promoting eco-friendly commuting. All stations will adhere to strict technical, safety, and environmental standards, ensuring compatibility with Honda-powered electric vehicles.

Sanjay Mukherjee, MMRDA Commissioner, emphasized the project’s role in advancing a low-emission urban ecosystem. “This partnership with Honda is a vital step toward sustainable transport,” he said, noting that the integration of battery-swapping facilities with public transit infrastructure positions Mumbai as a pioneer in India’s green mobility landscape. The network is set to expand rapidly, building on the foundation laid at Dahisar East.
