Mumbai Metro 9 Trial Runs Begin: CM Fadnavis Launches Phase 1 Between Dahisar and Kashigaon

Mumbai’s Metro Line 9, designed to link Dahisar (East) with Mira-Bhayandar, has entered its trial phase as Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis flagged off the initial test run on Wednesday. He was joined by Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde during a technical inspection of the Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon segment marking a significant milestone in the city’s expanding metro network.
According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), approximately 85% of civil construction on this stretch is complete. Due to ongoing work at some stations and infrastructure nodes, Metro 9 will be introduced in two stages. The first phase Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon is expected to be opened to the public after trial runs conclude, likely by the end of 2025.

Metro 9, also known as the Red Line, is an extension of the existing Metro 7 corridor (Dahisar East to Andheri East) and is part of a broader plan to enhance east-west suburban connectivity. The line is projected to significantly cut commute times and ease congestion across northern Mumbai and the Mira-Bhayandar area. Until a dedicated facility is ready, the rakes for Metro 9 will be maintained at the Charkop depot, which currently serves Metro 7.

During the inspection, CM Fadnavis highlighted the metro’s transformative potential for daily commuters. “This stretch from Dahisar to Kashigaon will offer seamless connectivity and greatly benefit Mira-Bhayandar residents and commuters from Mumbai,” he stated.
He also emphasized the engineering breakthrough featured in the project a double-decker structure supporting both metro operations and a railway bridge. “This is the first time such a dual-use design is being implemented in Mumbai. It will help ease traffic congestion and marks a key innovation in the city’s transit infrastructure,” he added.
Plans are already in motion to extend the metro line further north to Virar. MMRDA aims to have the entire Metro 9 corridor fully operational by late 2025, with further metro expansions across Mumbai scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
As trial runs progress and construction nears completion, residents in the western suburbs can look forward to a faster, more efficient commuting experience in the near future.
