Mumbai: Mumbai’s expanding metro network received a significant boost on April 7, 2026, with the inauguration of Phase 1 of Metro Line 9. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, and Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, formally launched the new stretch and took the inaugural ride.
The 4.97-kilometre elevated corridor runs between Dahisar East and Kashigaon, passing through two intermediate stations, Pandurang Wadi and Miragaon. This marks the first metro line to serve the Thane district’s Mira Bhayandar region, which has long relied heavily on road transport, resulting in chronic traffic congestion.

Officials expect the new line to offer residents a faster, more reliable public transport option. At Dahisar East, Metro Line 9 connects seamlessly with Metro Line 7, allowing commuters from Mira Road and surrounding areas to travel directly to Gundavli station in Andheri East without changing trains. This integration promises to significantly improve connectivity across Mumbai’s northern and western suburbs.
The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 18, 2018. According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), commercial passenger services on this Phase 1 corridor will commence from April 8, 2026.

Train operations are planned from early morning until late night. The first train is scheduled to depart Kashigaon at 5:50 am towards Gundavli, with the last service at 11 pm. During peak hours, trains will run every six minutes, while off-peak frequency will be every eight to ten minutes, an NDTV Marathi report mentioned.
The new corridor is expected to provide much-needed relief to daily commuters in the rapidly growing Mira Bhayandar area by reducing dependence on congested roads. MMRDA has shared glimpses of the decorated rakes and highlighted that the stretch has already received safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety.
This inauguration forms part of the broader expansion of Mumbai’s metro network aimed at offering efficient mass rapid transit to suburban residents.
