Mumbai Metro 3: First Look at Iconic Csmt Station on Aqua Line Unveiled; Blends Heritage With Modern Design

Mumbai’s urban transit system has welcomed a striking new addition with the unveiling of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Metro Station on Metro 3’s Aqua Line. Strategically built next to the UNESCO World Heritage CSMT building, the station delivers a unique balance of heritage and futuristic infrastructure.
The entryway is a visual highlight, featuring a glass dome framing the historic CSMT structure against the Mumbai skyline. By day, natural light floods in through the lattice-patterned roof, while at night LED illumination adds a sleek, modern glow. Urban architects have hailed it as a rare example of heritage and innovation coming together in a transport hub.
Inside, the metro station is equipped to handle Mumbai’s heavy commuter load, with spacious concourses, high ceilings, and polished granite flooring. The design prioritises accessibility, offering escalators, elevators, and tactile pathways for the visually impaired. Information boards in English, Hindi, and Marathi further enhance commuter convenience.
With multiple exits, passengers can seamlessly access key city spots such as the BMC headquarters, General Post Office, Azad Maidan, Bombay Gymkhana, Fashion Street, and Ballard Estate. Officials noted that these exits have been strategically designed to manage crowd dispersal and ease navigation.
The station also integrates cultural elements, showcasing murals and installations inspired by Mumbai’s heritage. This adds a touch of local flavour, making commuting more than just travel—it becomes an experience of the city’s evolving identity.
The operational launch of the CSMT Metro Station strengthens Mumbai Metro’s role in expanding connectivity while celebrating the city’s cultural legacy. For millions of daily commuters, it stands as a powerful symbol of a Mumbai where history and modernity co-exist.
