Mumbai Man Arrested for Setting Wife on Fire After Intimacy Dispute

Mumbai police have apprehended a man accused of setting his wife ablaze following her refusal to engage in sexual intercourse. The incident occurred in Chembur, where the woman, preparing to leave for work, sustained severe burns covering approximately 33% of her body, including her chest, stomach, legs, and arms. She is currently receiving treatment at Lokmanya Tilak Hospital in Sion.
The suspect, identified as Dinesh Awhad allegedly poured kerosene on his wife and ignited it during a heated argument on May 31, 2025. Neighbors, alerted by her screams, intervened to extinguish the flames and rushed her to the hospital. Police from the RCF station acted swiftly, arresting Awhad in the vicinity shortly after the incident. He faces charges under sections 109(1), 352, and 115(2) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
This disturbing case has drawn attention to issues of domestic violence, with posts on X reflecting public shock and highlighting ongoing debates about marital rape laws in India. The investigation continues as authorities ensure the victim receives necessary medical care.
