Mumbai Resident Faces Charges for Throwing Pet Cat from 9th Floor

Mumbai: Authorities have charged a Malad resident with animal cruelty after he was caught on CCTV throwing a pet cat from the ninth floor of a residential building, leading to the animal’s death. The incident, which took place on June 5 between 6:30 pm and 6:45 pm at GrowMore Onyx Society in Malvani, Malad, was captured in a video that later went viral, sparking widespread outrage.

The accused, identified as Kasam Sayyed, resides on the ninth floor of the building. The cat, a 15-month-old named Kalu, belonged to Gurjan Mohammad Umar Shamshi, a resident of the 21st floor. Initially, Shamshi’s family believed Kalu had been struck by a vehicle after discovering her body in the society’s compound. However, CCTV footage obtained on Tuesday revealed the horrific act, showing Sayyed picking up the cat and throwing it out of a window, resulting in its fatal fall onto a metal canopy below.
Speaking to Mid-day, Shamshi shared his grief: “We had cared for Kalu since her birth. On June 5, she went out as usual, but soon after, we found her injured. Despite our efforts to save her, she succumbed to multiple injuries.” Shamshi noted that accessing the CCTV footage was challenging due to resistance from the building’s staff, but the evidence ultimately exposed the truth.

The Malvani police have registered a case against Sayyed, and the investigation is ongoing, with the viral footage serving as critical evidence. The incident has drawn significant attention, with many calling for strict action under animal cruelty laws.
