Mumbai Local Train Tragedy: 922 Commuter Deaths Recorded in First Five Months of 2025, 210 Fell From Moving Trains

Mumbai has witnessed a staggering 922 accidental deaths among local train commuters between January 1 and May 31, 2025, according to data obtained via a Right to Information (RTI) application from the Mumbai Railway Police Commissionerate.

The alarming figures reveal a critical safety crisis on the city’s suburban rail network. Shockingly, 210 of these fatalities resulted specifically from passengers falling off moving trains.

Railway advocates and commuter groups point to persistent issues like severe overcrowding, insufficient train coaches, and inadequate platform safety measures as major factors endangering the millions who rely on this vital transit system daily.

“This is not just a statistic it’s a public health and safety emergency,” stated Ajay Bose, a Mumbai-based RTI activist who highlighted the avoidable nature of these daily tragedies.

The remaining 712 accidental deaths during this period stemmed from various causes, including track crossing incidents. Sources indicate Mumbai’s suburban railways transport over 7 million passengers every day across its Western, Central, and Harbour lines.
