MUMBAI – Commuters in Mumbai planning weekend outings, especially for Diwali preparations, should brace for widespread rail interruptions as maintenance works trigger a megablock across the city’s vital local train networks. On Sunday, October 12, 2025, services on the Central Railway, Western Railway, and Harbour Line will face significant halts, complicating travel for millions who rely on these lifelines.
The disruptions stem from essential infrastructure upgrades, with Central Railway implementing a multi-day “Pre Non-Interlocking” operation to remodel the Karjat yard. This initiative spans October 11 to 14, 2025, enforcing special traffic and power blocks over four consecutive days. Local trains between Nerul and Karjat, as well as Karjat and Khopoli, will be fully suspended during this window. On October 11 and 12 specifically, the majority of services linking Karjat-Khopoli and Khopoli-Karjat stand canceled. Trains originating from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) bound for Khopoli or Karjat will terminate short at Kalyan, Ambernath, Badlapur, or Nerul. From Badlapur and Nerul, alternate locals will proceed toward CSMT or Thane to ease the strain.
Shifting to the Western Railway, a four-hour jumbo block is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. between Borivali and Ram Mandir on the up fast lines, alongside the fifth line between Ram Mandir and Kandivali. Crews will focus on track repairs, signaling enhancements, and overhead equipment maintenance. To mitigate chaos, up fast line trains will reroute via the up slow or sixth line between Borivali and Andheri. Fifth-line operations will shift to the down fast line between Andheri and Borivali. Expect cancellations of select suburban services, with some Andheri-Borivali runs diverted onto the Harbour Line up to Goregaon. Travelers are urged to consult station masters for precise updates before departing.
The Harbour Line joins the fray with its own suspension: local traffic between Kurla and Vashi will cease entirely during the block. Replacement specials will operate from CSMT to Kurla and Vashi to Panvel. Additionally, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., passengers may use Thane-Vashi/Nerul segments as a workaround option.
These coordinated blocks, announced by railway authorities, underscore the push for long-term reliability amid Mumbai’s relentless commuter surge. As the city gears up for festive fervor, officials emphasize planning ahead to avoid last-minute snags. For the latest on cancellations and diversions.
