Mumbai Train Dispute Escalates into Language Conflict

A minor disagreement over a seat in a Mumbai local train spiraled into a heated language dispute on Friday evening, highlighting ongoing tensions in Maharashtra. The incident occurred in a crowded ladies’ coach on a Central line train, where a verbal altercation between passengers intensified when one woman demanded another speak Marathi or “get out” of Mumbai.
A video capturing the argument, involving six to seven women, quickly spread across social media, drawing attention to the contentious language debate in the region. The woman at the center of the dispute criticized a fellow passenger for not using Marathi, stating, “If you want to stay in our Mumbai, speak Marathi, otherwise get out.” Other passengers soon joined the confrontation, amplifying the conflict.
The Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police are investigating the incident, according to officials. This episode follows a series of similar confrontations in Maharashtra, where Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) party workers have faced criticism for targeting non-Marathi speakers. Recent incidents include the assault of a shopkeeper in Mumbai’s Vikhroli over a WhatsApp post deemed offensive to Marathi speakers, a street food vendor in Thane slapped for refusing to converse in Marathi, and the vandalism of a businessman’s office in Mumbai after he expressed reluctance to learn the language.
