Mumbai – The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a stern warning to residents, urging them to steer clear of the city’s beaches this Sunday afternoon amid forecasts of unusually high tides that could reach 4.15 meters.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a government weather agency, the peak tide is anticipated around 2 p.m., posing risks of strong waves and potential coastal flooding in low-lying areas. This alert comes as Mumbai’s monsoon season lingers into early winter, with erratic weather patterns amplifying the threat to popular waterfront spots like Juhu, Versova, and Marine Drive.
BMC officials emphasized the importance of public compliance in a statement released Saturday evening. “We advise all citizens to avoid venturing near the sea during high tide hours to prevent accidents,” said a spokesperson from the civic body’s disaster management cell. The advisory extends to fishermen and recreational boaters, who are instructed to suspend operations until conditions stabilize.

Historical data from the IMD highlights that tides exceeding 4 meters have occasionally led to disruptions in Mumbai’s transport network and minor inundations along the western suburbs. In response, the BMC has ramped up patrols along vulnerable stretches and coordinated with the Coast Guard for enhanced monitoring. Emergency helplines remain active, with residents encouraged to report any unusual water levels or debris via the civic body’s 24/7 control room.
While no evacuations are currently mandated, authorities are prepared to escalate measures if the tide surpasses predictions. The IMD’s bulletin, based on satellite and buoy observations, projects a gradual ebb after the peak, with levels dropping to safer thresholds by evening.
