Mumbai Bolsters Security After Deadly Pahalgam Terror Attack
Mumbai, India’s financial hub, has heightened its security measures following a devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed at least 28 lives, including two foreign nationals and two locals. The attack occurred on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, targeting civilians in a popular tourist spot, prompting the Mumbai Police to issue an internal advisory to senior officers to enhance vigilance across the city.
The directive instructs all Senior Police Inspectors and Zonal Deputy Commissioners of Police to intensify security protocols within their jurisdictions. This response comes in the wake of the Pahalgam attack, where assailants reportedly engaged in religious profiling, interrogating victims about their faith before opening fire. Witnesses stated that the attackers forced men to recite the Islamic declaration of faith, the Kalima, and executed those who did not comply, while others were subjected to physical checks for circumcision.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah traveled to Srinagar on Tuesday evening to conduct an emergency security review with intelligence and security agencies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also cut short his visit to Saudi Arabia to address the crisis. In Mumbai, security has been strengthened at key locations, including the state assembly, ministry buildings, the Sensex building, and the airport, with increased patrolling and checks .
The Pahalgam attack, one of the deadliest in the region since the 2019 Pulwama strike, has raised concerns about potential threats in other major cities. Delhi, Jaipur, and Amritsar have also been placed on high alert, with security agencies tightening surveillance at public places and border points. The attack’s timing, during a visit by US Vice President JD Vance to India, has further amplified security concerns.
