Mumbai Landslide Devastates Bhandup Homes Amid Heavy Rains

MUMBAI: A devastating landslide, triggered by relentless rainfall, struck Mumbai’s Bhandup area, reducing homes to rubble in moments, as captured in a viral video circulating online. The incident occurred behind Omega High School in Khindipada at approximately 7 p.m., prompting swift action from local authorities who cleared debris and evacuated nearby residences to prevent further tragedy. No casualties were reported, according to officials.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a high tide alert for Wednesday, warning of tides reaching 4.40 meters at 11:09 a.m. and 3.75 meters at 10:57 p.m., with low tides expected at 5:10 p.m. (1.84 meters) and 5:06 a.m. the following day (0.50 meters). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted continued heavy rainfall across Mumbai and surrounding regions, including Konkan, Goa, and the Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, for the next five days. Light to moderate showers are also expected in other parts of western India.

In the past 24 hours, Mumbai reported 11 tree falls, with eight occurring in the western suburbs, alongside seven electrical short-circuit incidents. The deluge disrupted Central and Harbour line train services, though Western line operations remained unaffected. The IMD’s orange alert for several Maharashtra districts signals potential traffic disruptions and subway closures as the city braces for more rain.
