Mumbai: Brain-Dead Woman’s Heart Reaches Hospital In 17 Minutes Via Green Corridor; Transplant Underway For 60-Year-Old Patient

A 38-year-old woman’s organ donation has brought hope to a critically ill recipient after her heart was transported from Mahaveer Jain Hospital in Thane to Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital in Powai within just 17 minutes through a meticulously coordinated green corridor.

The donor was declared brain-dead after suffering a hypertensive cranial bleed. Following confirmation by a medical board, her family chose to donate her organs transforming their tragedy into an opportunity for saving lives, according to Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital.

A specialized transplant retrieval team was deployed immediately. Through coordinated efforts between hospital staff and the Traffic Police Department, authorities established a green corridor that enabled uninterrupted, rapid transport of the organ. The heart departed Mahavir Hospital at 5:00 PM and arrived at Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital at 5:17 PM.

Following Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) protocols, the organ was allocated to a 60-year-old male patient with end-stage heart failure. The transplant procedure is currently in progress.

Dr. Sameer Kulkarni, CEO of Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital, commented on the significance of organ donation: “India has more than 80,000 plus patients waiting for organ transplants, yet our organ donation rate remains below one donor per million population. While over 18,000 plus organ transplants were performed in 2024—the highest ever recorded in the country the demand still far exceeds availability.”

He emphasized the life-saving impact of organ donation: “Organ donation is important because it gives people a second chance at life—sometimes even a first real one. For someone waiting for a heart, kidney, liver, or lungs, an organ transplant isn’t optional; it’s the only way to survive. One donor can save up to eight lives and improve many more through tissue donation. That’s a huge impact from a single, selfless decision.”
