MMRDA Launches Two U-Girders At Halav Bridge On Mumbai Metro Line 2B In Early Morning Operation

[From Our Correspondent]

Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully erected two U-girders above Halav Bridge on Mumbai Metro Line 2B (D.N. Nagar – Mandale), completing the operation at 4:00 a.m. on Saturday in what marks a significant construction milestone for the East–West corridor.

The Halav Bridge section posed considerable engineering challenges due to its location within the airport funnel zone, where the vertical clearance between the Metro viaduct and the existing bridge is limited to just 3.5 metres. Despite these constraints, the work was carried out smoothly after all necessary approvals were obtained from the concerned authorities.

Each of the two U-girders measures 20 metres in length and was erected using 500 MT capacity cranes under expert supervision. To limit disruption in this heavily trafficked zone, the operation was deliberately scheduled during night hours. Light motor vehicles including auto-rickshaws, taxis, tempos, and ambulances continue to use Halav Bridge, while heavy vehicles have been diverted through alternate routes.

The adjacent S.G. Barve Marg Metro Station has been designed as a single-level station in compliance with aviation height norms. Foundations and pier works for the station, along with viaduct sections on either side of Halav Bridge, have already been completed.

With this milestone in place, the project moves ahead to the next phases: track laying, installation of the overhead catenary system, power supply infrastructure, and telecommunications. In parallel, the proposed widening of A.H. Wadia Road being coordinated with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation aims to ease traffic flow and support movement during Ganesh Visarjan and other peak periods.

Rehabilitation of affected structures is progressing in a structured manner as part of the project’s broader commitment to inclusive development.

Metro Line 2B will connect key residential and commercial hubs including D.N. Nagar, BKC, Kurla, Chembur, and Mandale, and is expected to reduce travel time, decongest roads, and improve urban mobility for lakhs of daily commuters across Mumbai.
