Mumbai : A video circulating on social media that appears to show visible cracks on a pillar of the under-construction Mumbai Metro Line 4 near the Vikroli station has reignited public concern about the project’s structural safety. The clip, shared by a commuter, reportedly shows fractures on a segment of the elevated corridor close to R City Mall in Ghatkopar, prompting residents to flag potential construction issues to civic authorities.
This development comes just days after a tragic incident on February 14, when a section of the parapet wall on a Metro Line 4 viaduct in Mulund West gave way near the city fire station. The collapsing concrete fell onto an autorickshaw and a car, killing one person and injuring three others, one of whom remains in critical condition, according to earlier reports.
In response to the Mulund accident and the latest video, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has set up a 13-member “Special Intensive Safety Inspection Team” to evaluate structural risks along the entire corridor and identify any deviations from approved engineering plans. Authorities have said that construction activities will be paused until the team completes its review and outlines necessary remedial measures to safeguard workers and future commuters.
The Mulund collapse had already stirred widespread public debate and outrage over construction quality and oversight of the metro project. Since then, several residents have shared images and footage on social media claiming to spot misaligned slabs and other defects at various stretches of the Line 4 route, amplifying demands for stricter quality controls. In the wake of these concerns, officials reaffirmed that structural integrity and alignment with design standards are key focal points of the ongoing safety assessment.
