This pioneering initiative, launched by Central Railway in July 2017, was recognized in the Limca Book of Records 2018 for being entirely managed by women.

Matunga Station’s transformation into an all-women station stands as a remarkable example of empowerment and inclusion. A team of 32 women staff members, including 16 booking clerks, 9 ticket checkers, 6 operating staff, Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, pointsmen, and safai karmacharis, now oversee all aspects of the station’s operations. Their responsibilities range from ticketing and ensuring safety to managing operations and maintaining the station. This initiative not only empowers women but also gives them the autonomy to make decisions, improving both their personal and professional well-being while ensuring the station runs smoothly.

The team is led by Mrs. Sarika Sawant, the station manager, who has been a pioneering figure in this initiative. Sawant has shown outstanding dedication and leadership, ensuring the station’s efficiency and operational success.Smt. Manali Patil serves as the Chief Ticket Inspector, leading a dedicated team of female ticket-checking staff who ensure that all passengers at the station follow rules and regulations. Their hard work plays a crucial role in maintaining discipline and order, underscoring the station’s commitment to offering a safe and efficient travel experience for commuters.

Since the all-women team took over, the station’s operations have been running seamlessly, with positive and encouraging outcomes. The women have embraced their roles with great efficiency, demonstrating that with the right support and empowerment, women can thrive in all fields, including those traditionally dominated by men, such as railway operations. This initiative goes beyond employment; it embodies a larger vision of fostering an environment where women can take on leadership roles, make decisions, and manage operations efficiently, all while ensuring the overall well-being of the organization. It serves as a powerful example for other institutions and organizations, highlighting the crucial role women can play in public service and infrastructure management.

The success of Matunga Station is a proud accomplishment for Central Railway and stands as a glowing testament to how women’s leadership can influence the future of public transportation in India.
