On Sunday, July 5, 2026, a chawl collapsed in Mumbai’s Mankhurd neighborhood after intense rain, killing five children out of six people, according to officials. Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, ambulance, and BMC Ward Staff were called into action. After being pulled from the debris, the injured were taken to Shatabdi Hospital and Rajawadi Hospital. Five people who were brought in were pronounced dead, according to information from Shatabdi Hospital. Among them were four children, ages two to fourteen, and a thirty-two-year-old lady.

This incident adds to the growing list of people killed by monsoon this year, with trees falling on school buses, people falling down manholes, balconies crashing onto pedestrians, people electrocuted by wires and now entire chawls crashing onto adjacent houses.
