Major Fire Engulfs Dharavi Shanties Near Mahim Station, Halts Harbour Line Services For 3 Hours | Watch

Mumbai: A large-scale fire erupted in Dharavi near Mahim Railway Station on November 22, breaking out at 12:29 pm in shanties located within Navrang Compound on the 60-foot road. Upon receiving alerts, the Mumbai Fire Brigade, ambulance crews, and BMC ward personnel rushed to the scene, deploying at least four fire engines and additional firefighting equipment for containment operations.

While the precise cause remains under investigation, reports indicate the blaze may have been triggered by multiple cylinder explosions, with witnesses reporting at least two blasts.

Harbour Line services suspended

The Western Railway Control Room told Media Agencies that local train operations between Bandra and Mahim on the Harbour line toward CST were halted from 12:43 pm due to the fire emergency.

Mid Day reported, citing a Western Railway spokesperson, that five trains were held between Mahim and Bandra stations because of the fire.

Fire Officer S.D. Sawant told reporters the incident was classified as a level-2 fire that damaged 10 to 15 warehouses storing plastic scrap materials. “So far, three commercial cylinders have exploded. The cause of the fire cannot be ascertained at this time, as it is under investigation,” he stated.

Railway authorities release official update

According to Western Railway’s statement, “due to a fire incident in the shanties adjacent to UP Harbour line on the East side between Mahim and Bandra at around 12:15 pm, the electric supply to overhead equipment have been disconnected as a safety measure”.

The statement continued, “In view of this, the Harbour line train services have been regulated till the situation is under control. No risk to any passenger or trains as they have been regulated and are away from the site”.

Passengers report service disruptions on Harbour Line

Several M-Indicator users reported that trains from Wadala to Bandra and Goregaon were non-operational. Shared images depicted passengers walking along tracks after trains were stopped due to the emergency.

Some commuters unfamiliar with the situation asked, “What is the problem between Wadala to Mahim?” A commuter from King Circle confirmed, “No Trains Between Wadala and Bandra”. A passenger named Shriram also reported that authorities permitted passengers to travel via Dadar toward Goregaon or Andheri.
