Maharashtra Govt Issues Notice on Ola Electric Over Missing Trade Certificates

Pune: The Maharashtra government has issued a formal notice to Ola Electric Mobility Limited, demanding answers about why some of its outlets across the state are operating without valid trade certificates.

Details of the Notice

The Office of the Transport Commissioner sent the notice, claiming that multiple Ola Electric showrooms and service centers lack the required legal documentation. It alleges that the company has been selling vehicles through these unauthorized locations, violating state regulations. According to NDTV Profit, the notice—dated March 31 and signed by Joint Transport Commissioner Ravi Gaikwad—gives Ola Electric three days to respond. “This is a very serious matter,” the notice states, urging the company to explain why it should not face penalties. As of now, Ola Electric has not issued an official statement.

The action stems from a statewide inspection campaign launched earlier by the Maharashtra Transport Commissioner. On March 21, NDTV Profit reported that the commissioner directed all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to scrutinize Ola Electric outlets. These checks uncovered several locations operating without trade certificates, prompting the latest notice.

Under the Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, all vehicle manufacturers and distributors must secure trade certificates to legally register and sell vehicles. Additionally, Rule 35 mandates that every showroom or dealership obtain a distinct certificate from the relevant registration authority.
