Two people were feared dead and several others remained trapped after a landslide struck Mumbai’s Kurla area in the early hours of Wednesday. Civic officials said the incident occurred at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar at 3.48 am, triggered by heavy overnight rainfall.
Search and rescue efforts are currently underway, with multiple agencies deployed at the site, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the fire brigade, police, ambulance services, and civic ward staff.
Citing an official, a PTI report said two people were feared dead in the incident. Two others were injured and are being treated at the civic-run Bhabha Hospital in Kurla. The injured have been identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari, who suffered a head injury, and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari, who sustained a back injury.
DCP Ganesh Shinde confirmed the development in a statement: “Due to the rain, a landslide has occurred in the Ashoknagar area under the jurisdiction of the Ghatkopar police. Two bodies have been recovered so far, and rescue operation is underway.”
He added, “Police personnel are deployed here, along with all the necessary teams for the rescue operation—including officials from the BMC, NDRF, and other agencies. It happened around 3 AM. Around 4–5 people are likely trapped.”

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner (East Suburbs) Avinash Dhakane visited the landslide site in Ghatkopar to review the situation on the ground. Designated Officer Gajanan Jaitapkar said rescue operations were continuing and that authorities were weighing further steps, including the possible relocation of residents from the affected area to safer locations.
“Notices have been served. Even before, notices were given to several houses before the monsoon. The rescue operation is underway. We are deciding the future course of action. People in the affected areas can be shifted to safer places,” Jaitapkar told reporters. This is a developing story and details may be updated as rescue operations continue.
