Japan to Send E3 and E5 Shinkansen Bullet Trains to India by 2026 for High-Speed Rail Testing

Mumbai: Japan has announced plans to provide India with two Shinkansen bullet trains — the E3 and E5 models — by 2026, to support the development of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor. These trains will be used for trial runs and hands-on training before the corridor becomes fully operational.
Set to arrive in early 2026, the E5 Shinkansen, known as the Hayabusa, and the compact E3 Shinkansen, also referred to as the Mini Shinkansen, will play a vital role in familiarising Indian railway engineers and staff with high-speed rail systems. Their introduction marks a significant milestone in the India-Japan partnership on railway modernization.
E5 Shinkansen (Hayabusa):
Introduced in 2011, the E5 is one of Japan’s fastest bullet trains, capable of reaching speeds up to 320 km/h. It features a distinctive 15-meter-long aerodynamic nose that minimizes air resistance and ensures smooth, stable travel. The train, constructed from lightweight aluminium alloy, spans approximately 253 meters with 10 coaches and accommodates around 731 passengers. Known for its quiet operation and premium comfort, the E5 offers advanced features including high-end seating in its first-class compartments.
E3 Shinkansen (Mini Shinkansen):
Launched in 1997, the E3 Series is engineered for versatility, capable of running on both standard and narrow-gauge tracks. It achieves speeds of up to 275 km/h and is optimized for energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness without compromising safety or comfort. Typically configured with 6 or 7 coaches, a full E3 set stretches roughly 253 meters and can carry around 350 passengers. Its adaptability makes it ideal for routes requiring compact yet high-speed rail solutions.
With these additions, India takes another step closer to launching its first bullet train corridor, powered by Japanese technology and expertise.
