India’s Biggest Container Cargo Terminal Opens at Uran’s JNPA in Navi Mumbai | Here’s What You Need to Know

Navi Mumbai: The freshly launched container cargo terminal at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Uran represents a landmark achievement for India’s shipping industry. This upgrade has made JNPA the pioneering port in the country to exceed 10 million TEUs in capacity, solidifying Maharashtra’s role as a leader in worldwide logistics and maritime operations.

A standout element of the project is the Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT), managed by PSA India. Following the wrap-up of Phase II, the terminal boasts an impressive 4.8 million TEU handling capability. It covers an extensive layout with more than two kilometers of berth space, a 200-hectare storage area for containers, and top-tier equipment that’s among Asia’s finest for port activities.
Key Highlights of the New Uran Facility
The setup includes 24 quayside cranes, 72 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, and various rail-mounted gantry cranes to facilitate smooth transfers from ships to shore, speeding up cargo handling. With six specialized rail connections, the site is built to enhance integrated transport options. Its deep-water docks can handle the biggest container ships globally, up to 18,000 TEUs, boosting India’s edge in the international freight arena.
Focus on Security, Scale, and Eco-Friendliness
The entrance area features eight automated lanes for inbound and outbound traffic, incorporating tech like digital paperwork, weighing stations, and radiation scanners for safe and swift processing. Capacity and links aside, JNPA prioritizes green initiatives. The terminal runs on 60% renewable sources now, aiming for full sustainability soon.

It hosts the nation’s inaugural entirely eco-conscious terminal, complete with solar energy, water conservation via rainwater, and sustainable handling methods. Future steps include shifting from diesel to electric vehicles, establishing it as a benchmark for green port development.

Advanced digital tools define this operation. Through virtual replicas, 5G networks, and robust cyber defenses, the port adopts innovative intelligent systems. Features like live truck booking, unified parking zones, and specific areas for empty containers optimize workflows, cutting wait times and elevating trade performance.
