Dombivli Doctor Assault: Bombay HC Stays Corporator Ramesh Mhatre’s Bail, Orders Surrender by Sunday

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Saturday stayed a Kalyan magistrate’s court order granting bail to Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre in the Dombivli doctor assault case. Mhatre has been ordered to surrender to police by Sunday evening.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad took up the matter on its own after news reports surfaced about the bail order, staying it during a special Saturday sitting.

“Considering the gravity and seriousness of the issue and the perversity noticed in the impugned orders dated 14.07.2026 and 17.07.2026, both the orders stand stayed and shall be kept in abeyance until further hearing and orders,” the bench said.

Mhatre must surrender at Vishnunagar Police Station in Dombivli (West) before 5 pm Sunday and will be kept in magisterial custody. If he fails to surrender or cannot be traced, the court said, authorities can move to attach his immovable properties.

The bench also pointed to Mhatre’s record: 18 criminal cases registered against him in the past, several involving physical assault, with acquittals in 17. The suo motu case returns to court on Tuesday, July 21.

Mhatre was arrested for assaulting doctors at a municipal hospital along with four associates, who face the same charges. After his bail came through, doctors across Maharashtra said they would stay off work on July 22.
