CSMT-Bound Local Train Overshoots Platform at Thansit, Prompts Railway Inquiry

A local train headed for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) overshot the platform at Thansit railway station on Tuesday, with six of its coaches extending beyond the designated halting point. The incident occurred around 4:05 p.m., Central Railway (CR) officials confirmed.

An investigation has been launched to identify the cause of the operational error. “The train was delayed for a few minutes due to the incident,” a CR spokesperson told the media.

Although overshooting a platform is viewed as a serious safety lapse, railway authorities clarified that it is considered less dangerous than a “Signal Passing at Danger” (SPAD) incident. Both scenarios, however, typically stem from human error—often involving the motorman’s judgment or attention.

The mishap led to significant disruption for commuters. Passengers in the forward coaches were forced to disembark onto the tracks to reach the platform, while those waiting toward the rear struggled to board the train.
