On Friday morning, August 21, 2026, a crane fell into residences in a slum area in Mumbai’s Kurla East region, injuring at least ten people. Advertising Advertising The event happened at Buntara Bhavan, Mhada Building, behind Galaxy Apartment, Indira Nagar, Kurla (East), early in the morning.
Two injured people were admitted to Kurla Bhabha Hospital, while eight injured people were admitted to Sion Hospital and are all in stable condition.
The housing organization MHADA was getting ready to start a “eviction and demolition operation” there, according to the L-ward employees of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation who were on the scene.
“A hydraulic crane was being used to lift poklane to the top of a ground plus upper 17 floored under construction building, where demolition work was in progress by M/S Sunny Company,” BMC stated.
It also stated that a portion of the hydraulic crane fell during the operation onto the Samrat Ashok Nagar road, adjacent slum huts in Qureshi Nagar, and high-tension railroad overhead lines. Eight people were brought in with injuries, according to Sion Hospital. Authorities stated, “They are under treatment and in stable condition.”
Jagrulla Nabi Khan (63), Ahmed Niyaz (3 months), Atikur Reman (60), Hakum Sheik (36), Numan Khan (21), Rehman Khan (19), Suraj Gaur (10), and Akbar (40) are the injured; Raju Gaud (35) and Aarti Gaud (30) are admitted in Kurla Bhabah Hospital.
The crane was brought for demolition operations at Building No. 1, Bhandari Metallurgy, Kurla, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
“While the crane was being positioned at the site, it tilted and fell towards an adjoining structure. The ground at the location was soft, which appears to have affected the stability of the crane. Some persons sustained minor injuries in the incident. MMRDA is providing all necessary medical assistance and support to the injured persons,” it said.
