CNG Price Hiked to Rs 84/kg in Mumbai: Auto, Taxi Unions Seek Fare Revision After MGL Raises Rates by Rs 2

Mumbai’s auto rickshaw and taxi unions have called for a fare revision after Mahanagar Gas Limited raised CNG prices by Rs 2 per kg across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The revised rate of Rs 84 per kg came into effect on May 14.

Union leaders have urged transport authorities to approve a Rs 1 increase in auto fares and approximately Rs 2 for taxis, citing rising fuel and maintenance costs as increasingly difficult to absorb.

MGL attributed the hike to higher gas sourcing costs, fluctuations in global energy prices, and a weakening rupee. The company maintained that CNG remains more economical than petrol and diesel. Transport operators, however, said repeated price increases are cutting into driver earnings.

The fare revision proposal is now before the state transport authority. A decision is awaited in the coming days.
