BMC Shuts Down Dadar Kabutarkhana Amid Health Concerns, Warns Against Pigeon Feeding

Mumbai – The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken decisive action to address health risks posed by the Dadar Kabutarkhana, a well-known pigeon-feeding site near Dadar railway station. On Saturday evening, BMC officials covered the entire area with tarpaulin, effectively closing it off to prevent further pigeon feeding. This move follows a directive from the Bombay High Court, prompting the civic body to crack down on pigeon-feeding spots across the city due to rising public health concerns.

The decision stems from complaints about the growing pigeon population, which has led to widespread issues in nearby residential areas. Pigeon droppings and feathers have been linked to respiratory problems and other health hazards, particularly affecting residents’ windows and balconies. The BMC’s action is part of a broader effort to curb the spread of diseases caused by pigeon waste, which has become a significant concern in densely populated Mumbai.

Earlier attempts to dismantle the Kabutarkhana were met with resistance from local residents. On Friday night, a BMC team faced opposition from a crowd that blocked the road, preventing the demolition of the site. Despite this setback, the civic body has now moved forward with stricter measures. The BMC has warned that individuals caught scattering grains or feeding pigeons at the Kabutarkhana will face a fine of Rs 500 and potential legal action, including the filing of criminal charges.

The controversy surrounding the Dadar Kabutarkhana highlights a clash between tradition and public health. While the site has long been a cultural landmark where people feed pigeons, the associated health risks have prompted authorities to prioritize resident safety. The BMC’s actions align with the Bombay High Court’s orders to address the issue citywide, with similar measures expected at other pigeon-feeding locations.
