BMC Launches Drive to Remove Hawkers and Improve Walkability on Mumbai’s Footpaths

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has kicked off a major initiative to remove unauthorized hawkers and encroachments from Mumbai’s footpaths. This move is part of the city’s “pedestrian-first” policy, which aims to reclaim public spaces, enhance walkability, and improve road safety. A budget of Rs 100 crore has been allocated to this project to strengthen footpath infrastructure and create safer walking zones.

As part of the drive, the BMC is targeting high-footfall areas like railway stations, major junctions, and business districts. The focus is on removing illegal hawkers, shanties, and abandoned vehicles occupying public space. This multi-step approach also includes repairing and upgrading damaged footpaths.

Currently, over 32,000 hawkers are registered with the BMC, but the actual number is estimated to be much higher. The drive has already seen success, with over 100 unauthorized hawkers removed from Sion and Matunga. The BMC plans to continue this regularized effort across the city, ensuring that public spaces remain clear for pedestrians.
