BMC Intensifies Dengue Fight with Over 2 Lakh Mosquito Sites Fumigated Since 2024

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has fumigated more than 2.17 lakh breeding sites of Aedes mosquitoes, the primary carriers of dengue, across Mumbai since January 2024, according to data released ahead of National Dengue Day on Friday. This effort is part of a sustained campaign to control the spread of the viral disease in the city.

Since the start of 2025, the BMC has identified 25,169 mosquito breeding spots. The civic body also fumigated 2,292 buildings and approximately 27.19 lakh huts this year. In 2024, the BMC treated 5.9 lakh buildings and nearly 79.7 lakh huts as part of its anti-dengue measures. To boost public engagement, the BMC launched two mobile apps, Mumbai Against Dengue and Bhaag Machhar Bhaag, aimed at raising awareness and encouraging community participation in preventing mosquito-borne diseases.

The civic body reported 6,217 confirmed dengue cases during the same period, with 5,906 cases recorded in 2024 and 311 cases since January 2025. Health officials noted that dengue cases typically peak during the monsoon season, underscoring the importance of ongoing prevention efforts.
