BMC Clears Illegal Furniture Shops And Encroachments From Mohammad Ali Road, Frees Footpaths For Pedestrians

Mumbai: The Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has conducted operations against illegal encroachments involving furniture, wooden goods, and scrap shops that had occupied footpaths and roads on Mohammad Ali Road, Zakaria Road, and Maulana Shaukat Ali Road in South Mumbai. The encroachments have been removed, and footpaths have been cleared for pedestrian use.

For several years, numerous furniture and wooden goods shops had been illegally established on Maulana Shaukat Ali Road, alongside a large number of scrap shops. Old furniture was being repaired and sold on the sidewalks in the area. These unauthorized shops on the sidewalks and roads left no space for pedestrians to walk.

Assistant Commissioner of ‘B’ Ward Yogesh Desai stated that a campaign to remove illegal structures in the ward was launched from January 29 to February 5, 2026. Under this drive, illegal constructions and encroachments on Mohammad Ali Road and Zakaria Road were cleared during the day on Tuesday. A cleanliness campaign was also undertaken in the area. The action is set to continue in the coming days.

As Maulana Shaukat Ali Road falls within the jurisdiction of the ‘D’, ‘C’, and ‘E’ ward offices of the municipality, the operation was carried out jointly by all three wards. A JCB machine and a dumper were deployed during the action. Furniture and benches were demolished, while goods belonging to hawkers, including gas cylinders, were seized. The large-scale municipal operation was conducted under tight police security.
